Wake – Royal Canadian Navy Monument

This collaboration with Achia Design involved assisting with the stone detailing and developing the messaging design on this project originally conceived by Dialog Design. The form of the messaging surface, a low sloped wall describing an arc on a sloped ground plane, presented many design challenges in achieving messaging that looked correct. Many alternative approaches were examined, often at full scale on a mock-up set at the correct angle and slope.

The final design managed to make the text appear level, as the eye wishes it to be, without looking askew on a sloped and angled surface. The final layout was modelled and tested outdoors for the final approval. Intu assisted with determining the exact sizing and face angles for the stones. The final installation proved a striking addition to the existing Navy Monument.

“Stewart and Helena should be congratulated for an amazing job with this complex design.”

“The installation worked perfectly with very little site modifications.  I was really impressed on how the granite slabs fit together (like a glove).”
