The objective of this project was to replace a large and crumbling 1980’s era pylon sign identifying the Nepean Sportsplex with a new sign that incorporates modern video display technology and respects the City of Ottawa’s current visual identity. During the process an opportunity was identified to create a design that maintained a connection to the old sign by using painted steel siding to define a central mass analogous to the masonry structure of the former sign. The logo of the old City of Nepean was incorporated in a subtle manner below the main sign face, in a tip of the cap to the rich history of the Sportsplex.
Our long-time Engineering partner, ART Engineering, devised a clever connection detail that allowed the re-use of the existing footing from the original sign, saving time, money and disruption to the site.
