Design of all interior signage for the West Block on Parliament Hill, in collaboration with JKDesign and FGMDA Architects. The extensive renovation and redevelopment of the historic West Block building will turn it into a temporary home for Canada’s House of Commons, changing the building use dramatically. The signage was developed to conform to the spirit of JKDesign’s Parliamentary Precinct Interior Signage Guidelines (2000). Various concept directions were defined, with supporting narratives that related to the symbolism of Canada and Canada’s Parliament.
Several innovative material options were explored before settling on a final design that is a blend of modern and historic, in keeping with the orientation of the renovations. The suite signage incorporates card readers, disguising this technology in the heritage setting. Despite taking a minimalist approach, the final design package includes over 850 individual signage elements.
